AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint are the three latest companies to be locked in patent infringement lawsuits with Intellectual Ventures, which is suing the companies for their allegedly illegal use of 15 of its patents.
According to Melissa Finocchio, a chief lawyer for Intellectual Ventures, the company tried to avoid lawsuits with the defendants by reaching a licensing deal with them, but they were "unresponsive and uninterested."
"The wireless communications networks of AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile use a variety of important technologies covered by Intellectual Ventures’ patents," said Finocchio. "We filed a complaint for infringement today in the U.S. District Court of Delaware to get these three companies on a course toward compensating IV for the value of the inventions they use in delivering their wireless services."
IV owns more than 30,000 intellectual property assets, according to its website.
Given the prevalence of patent lawsuits, companies that rely on technology would be well-advised to secure a good professional liability insurance policy that could provide coverage in the event of lawsuits.
